replacement carb on order. I have a pile (three actually) of spare carbs but they are all for pre-QL tractors--wrong choke arm. Wondering? Can you swap this from one carb to the other? In other words, convert a 108 carb to work on the 1000. Can this be done?

I looked at the after market carbs that were on ebay a few weeks ago and that were the subject of a couple threads in the kohler engine forum, but they are no longer available. bought a used carb instead.

I'm seriously considering pulling the engine and rebuilding it now.

Answered my own question. Yes you can swap choke shafts from a QL carb to a non-QL carb. Just moved the shaft from my 1000's carb to a carb off a 108. works fine. Won't get a chance to install it until Sunday, but looks like this might work.

Default Old newbe

Old codger here, with a newly acquired 149. It's a good looking old tractor. Runs great, but with some maintenance / repair issues.
So, I just found this thread, and read it all the way through. Great information, that will be a continual reference, for my own work. I greatly appreciate the step-by-step progress report with pictures. I am an ex-mechanic/welder/fab/ cobbler. But new to the CC world of rejuvenate. I had one of the O's (nearly worn out) many years ago, but did not try to restore it.
Thanks,
Steve

Hi, Steve, welcome to OCC! I have a 149, too, and they are great tractors. (the one on the far left in my signature pic with the ags on front). When you get around to working on your 149 you should be able to find several 149 restoration threads here. Everyone is very helpful, I've learned a bunch from the folks here.

I put another carb on the 1000 and while it ran better, it's clear that the governor isn't working. It overspeeds and does not respond to the throttle as expected (won't return to idle) I'm still getting fire out the exhaust, so either it needs a valve job or the exhaust valve is sticking. The engine is coming out of the tractor and will be overhauled. Stay tuned for what I find as I disassemble this engine.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
