I just joined the forum, but currently do not own a Cub Cadet tractor. My dad worked for International Harvester in Memphis, TN in the late 60's thru the 70's. Dad had several Cub Cadet tractors during these years....4 at one time! When I was very young (around 6 or so) I would drive these tractors up and down the sidewalk in the neighborhood. I realize that would be quite a site today, but things were different then. I was completely safe and neither I nor anyone else was injured....I just eased down our sidewalk....pulled into a driveway....backed up...then went the other way down the sidewalk. We also had a city park behind our house where dad and I would ride these tractors. At almost 43 years old I can still remember driving these tractors. I would like to own one now just to drive from time to time for nostalgia reasons. I don't know the exact model I drove but it was an early/mid 70's era tractor that was the larger frame without headlights....not the narrow frame.

Allen,

This particular tractor wasn't the one I drove the most. I do remember this one with the red gas cap on top was faster than the main one I rode. The other one didn't have the gas cap on top, but looked similar....I think the pin stripe on the hood sticker was blue instead of red.

What can you tell me about this model 86? I think this photo says 1976 on the back.

Jeff

Jeff, the 86 had an eight horse Kohler engine. Only 8,489 were made. It had a gear drive tranny. If the tractor you drove had the blue stripe, it was either a 149 or 169. They were made from 9/71 to 10/74.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
