I'm also keeping repowering in the back of my mind, any places that are good to start to look for a repower for a 582/682,782?

I think that's what he means by repower. Online or a Briggs and Stratton dealer can always order one

I was hoping for a route a little cheaper than buying new I did find this nugget, a new in box KT17 Series II, but a little out of my price range

http://www.ebay.com/itm/KOHLER-KT17-...item25811acfad

I'm keeping an eye on Craigslist, one example specifically is the Craftsman GT6000 series as I've heard that twin interchanges rather easily. I guess I'm wondering what other machines (such as the Craftsman GT6000 series or other Cub Models) are that I could pick up cheap and harvest for the motor? That seems to be cheaper than buying just a motor.

Ya I thought the Briggs would be chespest and I already tried to convince him that a whole tractor would be the best for the money, local ih dealer has one of the white ones of that body style for sale $1500 the vangaurd is $1050 or theres a 1282 on clisy for 1100$ and I'm sure if he'd wait a little a cheaper red one would show on clisy or a local auction.
My post was chopped off on page 1 thought no-one saw it Ya best option would be buy another tractor for the engine or another cub

Depends when it was made with which engine. Some had the M18 which is a horizontal shaft and some had the MV18 which is the vertical shaft. Not sure which years have what, I haven't delved that much into it yet.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
