Default Trouble shooting a K-301?

Cant quite figure this out. Had no issue with the cub until yesterday. It now runs rough at wot (Wide open throttle and) oil started leaking a couple weeks ago seems to be coming from the top of the fly wheel housing? Runs fine at idle to half throttle.

If oil is coming from the front side of the engine (above the fins), then you have a blown head gasket or a warped head. If it is coming from the back side, you could have the same thing or you could have a blown engine. The head gasket is the easiest fix and I hope that is all that is wrong (that is what it sounds like to me if you are losing power at WOT). If that is the case, be sure to buy the Kohler head gasket for replacement....this is not an item that you want to save a few $$ on and follow the instructions for replacement. You would need to plane the head off too, unless it is really warped and then just replace it.

oil is coming form the side that faces the driver.

The head could need to be wore down .020" to be flat again, respectably. That's almost a giving for sure. Next I would inspect the head gasket. Make sure the head gasket is not burnt. I would replace with a new. Chances are oil is coming from worn piston rings, out of round cylinder, and or scorched piston area. My 71 will leak oil out the spark plug hole, when over filled.

Is the top of the piston oily? I really cant relate the oil leak to the sluggish WOT performance if the oil leak was going on when the k301 was running good at WOT a few weeks ago. Carb. or electrical. I would clean up the engine and run to watch for the oil leak. De-carbon the top of motor, and bottom of head.

That could still be the head gasket. Can you please post a picture?

Don't have[U][/picture yet but head off. Couple bolts where very loose. But what I found was just a little wet of oil by the exhaust vavle and a litter carbon. Have not check for flatness yet. Gasket looks complete.

Found choke stuck half closed. Still milling head and new gasket. Should have all parts before weekend and test fire.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
