Default Finally Got me a Cub!

Greetings all! Ive been lurking here for some time, looking at all the great pics and reading up on your builds and restorations. I consider it an honor to be a member here amoungst such talented mechanics and artists.
I have been wanting a Cub for a few years and finally a farmer friend of mine bought a "123" for his wife but she didn't like it, she wanted a new mower. Knowing I was wanting one he gave it to me in exchange for $200 of work I had done on a rental house of his, which he said is what he had in it. I went over to his father-in-laws house to pick up my "new" mower that was described to me as "only needing a PTO rebuild" and I saw it still sitting in his in laws trailer. that didn't throw any red flags right away. when the father in law came over to me he said, "it was running fine but, now it won't start". Uh OH! Well, it didn't start but we were able to push it on my trailer with relative ease once I released the hydro valves. I brought it over to my storage warehouse to work on it since space is limited at my house. Once I had it unloaded I started noticing that something didn't look right about my 123. The first clue was the silver hydro lever, oddly enough I noticed that before I noticed the white fiberglas dashboard. Hmmm...123's don't have those. The hood matches the grill, and the grill has a seperate spot for the headlights... Hmmm... So, now I'm thinking I have a 125, Wahoo! yay me! hey...wait a minute...why is the dipstick on the right side of the engine??? Hmmm... lets look at the engine model number, it should say K301 right here...wait a minute....K241???? what the *@#$??? That's a 10HP motor!!!! So, I have an underpowered 125??? well, that sucks! It was at this point I joined this forum and explains my forum name thinking I had a poor bastard pile of cubby parts. After some more research I discovered that IH did build a 10 hp Hydro in 1969, the 105. The Kohler motor is also a 1969 and all features of my machine match a 105 so... I have a 105. Once I get around to doing the paint I will put the proper decals on it. I replaced the starter solenoid and she fired right up with minimal smoke. My plans are to get it running well for this mowing season to take advantage of a very good looking 38" deck that came with it, then clean and paint her up over the winter. I am going to use this Cubby so she won't be museum quality when she's done but she will be loved and cared for as long as she's in my possession! Here she is...

Welcome!! Glad you decided to join in. I looked up the 105 as it is not referred to very often. My book does not say how many were made but did say that the 105 was the first 10 HP hydro produced. The 105 is a series 4 Cub Cadet made from Nov 67 to Aug 69. With the serial nr we can nail the month of production. Don't sell that 10 HP K241 short. I have two 102s that have been doing the job for many many years. The serial nr is located on a tag attached to the left rear of the diff housing.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
