Default Bought a new GTX 2100 today... it broke in 20 minutes

Hello - I'm new to the forum and would like to solicit thoughts and opinions of Cub experts. I shelled out $5K today for a new GTX 2100, got it home and it ran for 20 minutes and the blade-drive belt shredded. Its now back at the dealer and won't be available for "4 or 5 days." Have other 2100 owners experienced this problem? Is it something commonly observed with this drive mechanism? I'm having serious buyers remorse (and trying not to be angry). Thoughts/opinions... thanks in advance. - Rod

Welcome to OCC! Sorry to hear about the problem with your new cub. The dealer should be able to have you mowing real soon.

Thanks ACecil, this forum seems like a great source of information. I'm most curious to know if other 2100 owners have experienced this problem of if I just had an unlucky start with Cubs.

Maybe something was not done correctly during the dealer setup. In light of what happened, I'd be on the phone to the dealer to suggest to them that your machine get an extra going over by a knowledgeable tech.

When you get it back, check the oil and the deck level at least.

Default Gtx2100

Sounds like someone didn't set it up correctly. I have a GTX2100 with 15 hours of mowing time, no problems. I did go through the machine and check all fasteners and cables first thing (These machines are man made). I found choke cable outer housing not secured at dash and a few fasteners loose. So when you get it back don't assume, check it.

I bought a new GT2000 in June 2011. After 6 hours of run time, the PTO belt broke. The dealer did not have the Cub belt in stock and gave me a $15.00 belt until he could get one in. The $15.00 belt now has 95 hours on it and is still running. I installed it myself and I noticed that (during install) the belt twisted slightly in the mule drive. I had a friend help me and it was a PITA to get it straight and running true. I believe the dealer setup had the original belt twisted slightly on the mule drive. It is really hard to detect, you need a flashlight and you have to get very close to inspect the belt. Any slight twist in the belt (on the pulley) will generate a lot of heat and break the belt within a few hours. That is my experience and there are a lot of other possible causes for your problem.
Good Luck
Leo

Thanks Leo that is super helpful. I'm going ask the dealer to please double check that. Im also going to ask if he can substitute a non-Cub belt until he can get the One the tractor came with. If it happens again though I think I'll ask him to take it back. 5 Grand is a lot of money for a mower. Unfortunately, the work at my place doesn't stop when the machines do. Thanks again for the insight.

Did Cub go back to the POS mule drive system again?

I don't know what a mule drive is, but I'm feeling like I bought a POS.

I think they are a pretty good machine and maybe the dealer just missed something on the setup. I thought that they would have used a shaft drive deck system like on the 3000 series, JD 400 series and Kubota G series. 5K sounds like a lot of money for a garden tractor but that is what the original owner paid for an 1811 I had at one time in 1986. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
