I think these old tractors were more fun r gardens and less for mowing. I can bog my 10 hp easily in second while mowing. My dad's x595 hogs through the same grass like it's nothing.

I think we are talking on 2 sides of the fence I get to use both old and new to mow with the newer units handle the deeper decks and I think that's where some of the design changes do better do I think newer is better not in every thing and I also think they raised the wing tip speed which helps in the cutting and helps against bogging

Here's my take:
1960s-70s Garden tractors were made to be tractors, and tractors at that time get the job done efficiently because they were slower; farming was slower. Todays world is GO GO GO GO GO GO GO %1000 of the time and (most) people don't want slow and effective, they want fast and effective. I'll take slow. I don't need my driveway plowed or my grass cut at Richard Petty speed. I also think it has to do with better torque of the old machines.

I just bought an Exmark zero turn with a Kawasaki 23 HP motor. The machine has tremendous blade speed and will cut very well at the highest ground speed which is very fast at full throttle.
I love to mow with my old cubs and they do cut very nice but the Exmark is simply a yard tiger when you need to get it mowed fast, even wet grass.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
