I have been sorting out the 982 I picked up last fall, after a good carb cleaning, points set, plugs and wires it runs half decent .Has anyone removed the intake manifold and resealed the two halves?I can see it's leaking and I know it will never run right that way.Just wanted to know if it's a tough thing to do and any pointers if you have done it.I really like this Onan engine but have never owned/worked on one before. Thanks for any insight on this.

Well I guess I'm all alone on this one, I know it's a less common(my first Onan too) engine .Today I removed the intake and drilled out the rivets that held it together.I cleaned up both halves and resealed and used small nuts and bolts with locktite on to hold it together.I have a new carb and new gaskets on the way and will report how it turns out.

I finally got time to get back to the 982 project, I cleaned up all the gasket surfaces.I installed the resealed intake with new gaskets at the block and new gaskets on the exhaust as you have to loosen them to get the intake off.I also put on the new carb ,the Walbro just was not working right and I got tired of fooling with it.I touched up the paint on the engine covers I had to remove to do the work and turned out for the best as I had a bit of mouse house remains in the cooling fins to clean out.Once it primed the carb she fired up and ran really well.I let it warm up and adjusted the carb a little for a smooth idle .Once I got it all back together I thought about taking pictures.I snapped a few ,you can see the new carb but really thats about it.Over all very pleased on how it came out.I took it out and mowed the back lawn and it ran really well.If you find yourself with an Onan with a leaky intake ,don't hesitate to fix it .
Thanks , Bob |

I was told my tractor had an Onan engine, I looked under the hood, and the engine seemed to be missing!!
![]() ![]() ![]() Actually, I had the engine rebuilt when I got it, and never serviced it other than annual oil changes, and a couple air filters. That may be the reason for little response on the Onan engine!! |

How's your manifold holding out? Did the lock tite work? Where did you end up buying your new carb at? Bet that cost a fortune! I know my carb is getting tired. Kinda scared to find out what it would cost to replace. Isn't that a crazy way to mount a carb? Dismantle most of the top end of the engine to get it off.

WOW! That's A LOT cheaper than I thought it would be, I figured it would spoil $300.00 without batting an eye!

To be honest I have not run it much since the reseal, but seems fine.As to the carb I got mine from E-pay,but Oak found a really good deal.I got tired of messing with my old carb and the new one was just the ticket.I do have to agree about how they mount the carb is a pain. The 982 will get as full resto as I can do once the weather warms up and I can paint again.I can't wait to get back to it.Good luck on your project!

I'm glad some people have good endings dealing with onan engines. My onan broke a piston rod and broke part of the cylinder wall I looked anything for onan for years and that is the first time I saw any onan parts store. I'm going replace the engine with a 25hp Kohler at least it will be easier to find parts for.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
