My question is about the replacement of brakes on a 4814R hydro drive walk behind. The basic questions: how hard and source for parts?
I've attached a photo of the owner's manual so you'll get a better idea about the model to which I'm reffering. I've manual describes a procedure for how to adjust the brakes, and I think I've taken up all the adjustment available. It leads me to believe that I need to replace the brake pads; not surprising given the age of the mower. Therein lies my confustion. I've been to partstree.com and the cub cadet site and called cub cadet (actually MTD since they own the brand), but I can't find a picture on an exploded diagram that shows the brake parts. On the phone, MTD gave me a part number (718-3051) and name (arm-brake actuator) and price ($42 each). It's not clear to me if I have to take the transmission apart as they suggested on the phone to get to the brakes or not. I'm afraid this is too much for me and I can't find a repair manual to describe the proceedure. So, any insights into this model mower and the brakes or aother reasons why the left break wont grip reliably to enable turning? Source for a manual? Source for parts? Am I in a not-worth-it-to-fix situation? This is a great mower and I'd like to get it working well. Home owner, no commercial use. This might be the last mowe I own (if I can get it fixed). |

Looks like it is all inside the trans case. I know nothing about these but I think this is the parts view from the Cub site

Yes, I've looked at these before and didn't see brake parts.
Ugh!! I'll go to local shop and see about their estimate for a repair. Great site. |

I'll need to find the niche for walk behinds.
Not quite as sexy as the old riders and garden tractors. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
