Nice 149. I bought my second in December. My favorite of the Cubs too.

I hope you had that tractor tied down for the ride.

Great find on the 149.
Those items you mentioned are small potatoes compared to others I have owned.

Default 149 cubs

Thanks for all the good wishes. I have been tinkering with my 1st 149 and will have to rebuild carb. Float not regulating fuel in bowl. Going to order parts Monday. The 149 that I brought home a few days ago has a lot of play at front axle. If I grab a front tire I can move the axle from front to rear quite a bit. What part usually wears in this area? Does the axle wallow out or does the pivot pin wear? If the axle wears, can it be repaired? All input will be appreciated.

Default 149 teardown

Been a while since I picked up this 149 but I've made a little head way. Steering wheel removal was really tough. Every thing else is coming off with out too much effort. Was wondering if the rear end and hydro pump will come off the frame as one unit. I have a small floor jack but I believe it would roll off. Don't have any one to help out so I will have to think this one out. Attached a couple pictures showing my progress.

Didn't see anyone reply to your question. A couple things. yes, the pin wears, so you can replace that. The frame channel that the axle is in spreads apart, you can squeeze it back to make it tight (or use some shims). The steering gear box is a third place that develops play, adjust the cam follower stud to remove excess play. (you may want to remove it and regrind or replace it).

Wheel bearings and spindles/king pins are another source of steering slop, and those can be repaired, too.

Bob, I have never done it but it seems like I saw a picture in the manual available from here that showed the rearend and hydro unit being rolled out from the frame. Obviously the wheels/tires were still on, they used a large cresent wrench on the hitch as a lever to keep the front from tipping down.

Only other thing would be to block the frame so it didn't fall when you rolled the rear out.

I hear you there. When I bought my cubs I picked up what I thought was a rough 149, since it was on the way to the 129 w/ tiller I needed. Seemed to run good and had a 50" deck and it was cheap so I figured why not right... After I got it home I get looking it over a bit better and have decided someone had a pile of cub parts that they bolted together, complete mis match. Kicker is there is only 1 bolt holding the rearend in, the rest are stripped and it appears there are 2 brackets near the front of the rearend that are broken...
