X2. my 149 makes a similar noise starting. I need to adjust the neutral. It's on my list.

Does the tractor try to move in "neutral" either when shutting down or starting up? If so, that's likely the problem.

No...I have never experienced any problems with the tractor trying to go into neutral - quite the opposite - I have often had to tighten the shift lever to prevent it from going into forward or reverse when I don't want it to. I don't believe there are any issues with the transmission. I'm sure that last night I still had the brake locked when I tried to move the shift lever. At any rate, I had my repair guy come and take my tractor along today. He is going to try a used starter that he has (virtually impossible to get a new one anymore) and see if that's the problem. It's either that or something in the engine - although when it starts it sounds fine to me. Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. I just don't have the time to do much troubleshooting during the next few days and if it is the starter, there is nothing I can do about it. I'll be interested to find out what the problem is.

Best,
Keith

I think you misunderstood me. I didn't mean that the tractor tries to go INTO neutral, it tries to GO while in neutral, either forward or reverse, exactly as you've described. I think you need a neutral adjustment, not a starter.

One other item is the grass screen, if it's loose, it can make some noise rubbing the flywheel shroud. But that is unlikely to make it difficult to start, as an improperly adjusted neutral on the hydro does.

The thing is - I've had problems with the shift lever getting loose while the engine is running and wanting to move forward or backwards many times - it never once also created a problem with starting. Thanks for the suggestion though. I'll wait and see what my technician finds out. There is still the possibility that it's in the engine I suppose.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
