It started off bad, busted a roll pin on the snowthrower, replaced pin and started to finish the job when I noticed a lack of power so I thought I needed gas or the throttle cable screw had come loose.
![]() Took it up the driveway to make the adjustment and add gas, went to start it and nothing, nada, zip, zilch. It was dead would not turn over I jumped the starter generator with a spare battery it turns over, but no joy, will not fire, I smell gas, it ran good up till then. Pushed it up the driveway and into the garage waited a couple hours now it turns over and runs like it did before. I did not work it hard, oil is good, battery is good, gas is good, but something is not and I have no idea what it could be if you know, help me out. I changed the voltage regulator a few weeks ago with no issues there. I was a little lazy and didn't put a gasket on the points cover but it looks tight with no gaps, I will fix that today. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

How long did you run the tractor before this happened? It sounds like a heat related issue, either a sticking exhaust valve or perhaps a bad coil. Try using some marvel mystery oil (MMO) in the gas and oil. Has the coil been replaced?

Thanks for the input, I thought the switch for the brake pedal would have caused it and I looked at it but the plunger goes down and starts. I got up this evening and had to blow snow again, started and ran like a champ. I run sea foam thru it off an on, I will be looking at the switch again to see what is going on with that again because when it was dead when it would not start didn't turn over or anything just dead.

Go to page 20 (or 1-9) of this manual:
http://ccmanuals.info/pdf/86_1650service.pdf You might have a PTO safety switch issue as well. In the diagram, I believe "Magnetic Switch" is the starter solenoid. If it doesn't click, you probably have a safety switch open somewhere. If it does click, but nothing rolls over, you have a solenoid or starter motor problem most likely.

Thanks for the help I found it after checking the wires and switches the battery ground was loose enough to give me the intermittent start issue, sometimes it's the most basic things that get overlooked.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
