I think $1200 is like twice what a nice, complete, running machine with a good deck would bring. At least here on the East Coast.

my .02 is $250 then at least you can make some by parting it out. Ive got a 129 with a bad engine Im only ASKING $175 for so that should give you an idea. Right now from what I see tractors are rock bottom on value. There is a 1872 running and mowing in Elizabethtown KY and he is only asking $1400 and its a SUPER! So $1200 is way off.

One thing to remember is location and how motivated the seller or buyer are effects price.

I would hate to have you drive and come home empty. You could always go and wave some green in front of his face and see what he does. If he won't budge and come down quite a bit, I'd walk. There are a lot of quietlines out there for a more realistic price............

Update:

Went to look at it (had some spare time today and I made the drive). The motor is frozen solid, will not budge one bit. Check the oil level and it seemed full. The paint job is horrible (but at least it won't rust). And there is a bunch of steel welded onto the front frame to make the craftsman snowplow work.

He mentioned that it's probably the wiring because 'a mechanic' looked at it and noticed that the front pto still spins, so the engine must still turn over

Offered $250, but he thinks it's worth double that. I don't have time to rebuild the motor so I didn't push at all. Oh well, the search continues. Would have been really nice to have that tiller.

Thanks everyone for your input!!!! I still have my original that I'm working on.

To me too much work- find a nicer one.

I think 1X50 in good running order with a deck for $300-600.

For all that, I would be hard pressed to pay anything over $100 and that's a high amount.

Boy, good mechanic he had look at it. Considering the front PTO would spin even if the motor was stuck. Wow! I think we all agree you made the right choice. Keep your eyes open and something will pop up. Springs around the corner (Yes!!) and some cubs and even tillers will be coming up for sale soon, I'm sure.........

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
