Glad you figured it out.

I've never really tore one of these motors apart but couldn't a you (hypothetically speaking if you didn't have the 86 engine) bore out the 800 block and put a sleeve in it? or is there not enough meat on the engine?

Oh I'm sure I could have. The block is still salvageable, but like you said, it needs re-sleeved. I'd have to pencil it out to see if it would be really worth it or not. If I didn't have the 86 engine I'd probably end up selling a few Cubs to cover the expense of an overhaul

Ryan,
I know you won't throw away that block. Hold onto it!

The K181's don't come up too often for sale and can be hard to find. Glad you were able to get the 800 running.

Well after a year of being parked after the big engine swap, I wanted to put an update to this thread and show a little progress on the 800 that I bought well over a year ago.

Since I last posted I finished the major engine repair and moved onto smaller things. Last winter it did get 4 new ISO mounts and I figured out the key switch problem to be an intermittent short in the safety switch. After that I did do some driving around with it and found out the driveshaft was bent...so out came the motor again and straigtened that and greased up the TO bearing. Had to put some new screws in the dash, and added a nice new seat...that was just the winter of 2013!

Today it finally came back out of the shed and got some new parts. I added 4 different tires and got rid of the cobbed up rims in the front and the mismatched rear tires. I added a headlight panel to it for headlights, and finally found an air cleaner so I can run it for long periods of time. Pics in a few...

Here are the updated pictures of the 800. One is showing the headlight panel without the headlight bulbs, also the new air cleaner. I hope that the side shield will still fit? Has anyone tried this? I figure I will never find the right air cleaner.

Another pic is a side shot without the sideshields. Finally put some narrow fron ttires on it. It steers very easy now.

One pic is showing the new seat A BIG improvement over the rusted out pan that was on it before.

One pic shows some work I still need to do. I need to fix the lift handle for the deck. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Also shows the notch in the frame for the big starter.

Also need to crimp the front axle mount to tighten it, add the deck and make sure that is all working. Plus headlight wiring. Everything will be worked on minus the rear end it seens like...

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
