While mowing I heard a horrendous noise underneath me, followed by the blades stopping. Turned off engine, looked underneath and the deck belt was broken and wrapped around the left deck pulley, and the pto had broken in half and part of it was on the deck and part was still on the engine drive shaft. Anybody ever had this happen? What would have caused this? The pto broke apart where the three thin metal strips hold the thing together.

Sonds like a bearing failure or someone forgot to tighten the bolt last time the drive belt was instaled.

The bolt that secures the PTO to the engine drive shaft also broke. Is the 1042 considered to be a riding mower or lawn/garden tractor? Kind of confusing.

Your 1042 is a riding mower or "lawn tractor", it is not designed to pull ground engaging implements such as plows, discs, culitvators, etc. Garden tractors are, and will usually run 23 to 26 inch rear tires and larger front tires

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens.
