Josh,

Thanks for the pics. I can now see that starter is something odd. Oh well, the most fun is the search.

There are lots of people who get on my case about buying basket case tractors. I just like proving them wrong when I finally whip them out of the shed and use them

Any time I see or hear of a cub being parted out or hauled off to the trash meister I feel like screaming DON'T DO THAT, THEY ARE NOT MAKING THESE ANY MORE.

I agree.... I hate to see them hacked up, particularly when they're serviceable.

Cubcrazy, thank you for the picture of the 800 muffler. I believe that this one has one, and I think it has the electric PTO also.

PaulS, I know what you mean. I saved a complete rustbucket 70 a few years ago and got totally criticized for doing so. I repainted it, and it runs and functions just fine (thanks to about three donor tractors). But it was worth it. Personally, I think any collector or enthusiast should experience a Cub Cadet project that is in-depth. It helped me learn a lot about their parts and how they are assembled and what to fix.

Here's a before and after pic of it.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
