Default Powder coating question(s)
I did a search on powder coating on this site and it was very helpful. One questions I have that I couldn't find was this:
Does anyone know how many pounds of powder it takes to paint the frame, axle, fenders, etc that is Yellow. I think I may try to powder coat some spare parts and If the results are good, I may do a a whole wide frame in powder. I don't want to buy too much or too little so if someone has experience, it would be greatly appreciated.

The guy who is doin mine told me to order 4 lbs. yellow and 1 of white. About $130 for the powder From' Columbia Coating. The stuff I am getting is metal flake, regular may be a bit less because they can buy it in larger quantities. The engine hAS TO BE DONE IN PAINT, NOT POWDER.

Bob, the cost of the powder is cheap $2 for standard blend and up to $7 for a custom mix (that's per pound and the more you buy the cheaper it gets). With powder coating it's all about the labor if your taking it into a shop. Are you doing this at home or taking it to a shop?

I got lucky my local powder coater has the correct colors for the originals I'm doing. The white was a stanard color they carry. With powder coat you can blend in how much of a shine you want it to have. Be ready to tear everything apart for powder coating. All seals, gaskets, o-rings and your transmission. It's a 100% tear down no way to do it with out doing it.

Holy smokes $130 for 4 pounds! That $32.50 per pound. I can get it for $2-7 per pound. I don't see how metal flake would add that much to it. The more you buy the cheaper it gets.

Are you doing this at a powder coating shop or home?

What are the steps I need to take to get my 128 ready to powdercoat. I have totally disassembled it except for the tranmission. What do I do to the trans?

It has to come apart too! All rubber seals and gaskets.

I'm powder coating my 149 and think 3 lbs yellow will be more than enough.

*the two colors I am using are from prismatic powders (541) 826-1422. *They are porcelain white (pss 2094) and tractor II yellow (pss 1836).

I think they are very close to original for my 149 and were a lot cheaper than $32 per lb.
