Default 122 running real hot.

Finnaly got my 122 running and was cutting my grass and noticed smoke comming from under the hood. Picked hood up and top of the eng was smoking and gas in the fuel tank was boiling. It was so hot the boot on the spark plug started to melt. Is that normal? This is my first Cub and have only had it a couple months and like I said this is the first time I had it running under load for an extended period of time. Any thoughts on why its running so hot.

check to make sure that there isnt any grass or dirt built up behind the shrouds and in the fins of the engine/head. also check your carb settings and see if there is anything in the bowl (wouldnt hurt to just clean it all out ) mine ended up being the carb was set to lean and caused my 102 to do the same exact thing. hope this helps.

I cleaned the carb but did not mess with the settings. My float had a hole in it so I soldered it and it seemed to be fine so I ran it. I mowed for about 45 min and it started acting up. While I was looking around the eng noticed fuel running out of air cleaner so my guess is the float did not seal. Could that be the prooblem? To much fuel.

ive never heard of them overheating from to much fuel. from what i've been told and kinda makes sense that the fuel actualy helps cool the cylinder dont know if thats true or not but works for me. i would try doing a whole carb clean with the jets and all. get em all nice and clean. you really needa pull the jets all the way to get em good and clean. there is a chart on this site with the baseline settings. i set mine to those and its been great ever since

Ok I will do that. Have to order a new float so while I am waiting on that I will tear the carb down. Thanks for the help.

Default Just a thought...

You might want to check the oil as well. If there was that much fuel flowing into the engine, you might want to make sure that the excess fuel didn't wind up in the crankcase. That would be bad and if it wasn't getting enough lube, I could see where it would run hot. Check and see if the oil level raised mysteriously or, if you can smell any fuel in the oil. If it hasn't been changed recently, now might be a good time. My .02

Ah no this is not normal. My first thought would be to make sure the engine isn't dirty in any way as already suggested, then go from there.

Sounds like your timing is off a little. Make sure the points are somewhere in the neighborhood of .020 .
