The gasket compresses when it gets hot conforming to the surfaces. a while back I honked the head bolts down on a M-18, going #5 over max thinking I'll get away without retorking,--- and it worked!! i got about 3 mowings-- maybe 8-9 hours out of it them,then I bought new gaskets and did it again because they were leaking and retorquing didn't work. They were damaged.
