Default k161 was locked up

ok i got a 161 that was locked up.. i got it free moving, i guesss the question is the cylinder dont look to bad but should i go ahead and order a ten over kit and just bore it out. or go stock bore and hope for the best.dont have it torn all the way yet just took the head off so i am banking that the crank will be good

i say bore it out just to be sure that the cylinder wall isnt screwed up.

Take it and have it check at the machine shop per the specs in the service manual. You have to know what you have before you start buying parts.

If you got the motor freed up and the cylinder wall looks ok put a little oil an the cylinder wall and put the head back on. See if it runs ok and does not smoke after running for awhile. Sometimes you will get lucky and will be fine. If it does smoke you need to take out the piston and have the bore checked with a bore gauge. This way you can see how much you need to have it bored out.

I'm gonna be honest, that's just plain bad advice. Engines don't seize for no reason. Every seized small engine I have disassembled had the rod stuck to the crank. This happens when the engine is run too low on oil or the dipper breaks off. The rod gets extremely hot when this happens, and permanent damage has occurred. Trying to get it to run after this will either score the crank so badly it cannot be repaired, or cause it to throw the rod through the side of the block. The engine needs to be disassembled and inspected, at which point the appropriate course of action can be determined.

That is true if it was seized due to lubrication, but the situation would be different if it were seized due to time and humidity effects on the bore,piston, and rings.

I have seen many engines restarted and used after a stuck piston was freed.

If you do not look for the problem, it is a crap shoot running an engine.

I don't disagree. It sounds like he's had the head off. It'd be pretty obvious if it had gotten water in there and seized due to rust.

At any rate, that engine needs to come apart.

well i believe it was to due weather this tractor has set outside in the weeds for about 10 yrs so i have been spraying pb in the spark plug hole then it finally freed up so then i took the head off its getting tore down anyway im thinking just taking it ten over and ordering the kit for it i plan on pulling with it so i think not boring it will be useless being that its gonna need seals and gaskets anyway
