The first thing I'd do is find a rebuilt or rebuildable Kohler/Carter adjustable carb to replace that POS Walbro. A lot of those fixed-jet carbs run too lean.

Sorry for all the noob questions, but will these bolt up or will I need some kind of adapter plate?

It's a direct replacement.

Both my 1450 and 1650 have a black plastic spacer between the carb and the intake, it's about 1/8" thick as I remember. I don't know if it's there with your Walbro, and if you'd need it if you replace it with a Carter.

Here's what I addressed today. I recently plowed unknowingly with this 1650 for a short while with no incident. I found mouse house material coming out around the spark plug. If your grandpas tractor has been in a barn for 10 years you probably have an apartment complex in there.

A quick update, I got the carb pulled off. I then pulled off exhaust shield to find that the exhaust WASN'T ATTACHED to the engine!! No wonder it was so loud! I expect this accounts for all the heat as well. The little exhaust manifold was unscrewed (and seems smaller than the threaded hole in the engine, unless it has a pretty hefty taper), and the muffler wasn't clamped to the little manifold. The threads on the short little manifold look pretty buggered, I reckon finding a new one is in order.
There's also an extra muffler in the corner of the garage. Its times like this when I wish I could ask grandpa which muffler is old and which is new. I have a suspicion that whatever the source of the mystery, it has something to do with when grandpa first started to slip a bit years ago. Any advice on mounting new exhaust flanges? |

Maybe the muffler collapsed inside and is no longer flowing, hence someone unhooked it to keep on truckin'. If these mufflers won't flow out, a new one is in order.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
