The 1650 service manual tells of the need for a ball in the coupling between the drive shaft end and hydro pump shaft. The one that was in the coupling escaped during disassembly. Is this component critical since the coupling ends are pinned to the shafts? Does the flex joint allow enough movement to cause a problem? If so, what does the "ball" look like, or can a substitute be used?

I don't have much experience with them and I don't know what kind of results you will get running without it.
The Ball, is a simple ball bearing, though I have never looked to buy a single ball bearing, it shouldn't be too hard to find. Some of our sponsors may have them, your local Cub dealer may be able to get one, or your local bearing house. The ball fit's inside the "cup", it isn't tight by any means but it fills the entire hole. |

I see the ball is 5/8". Wow. What might have fallen out of the coupling when I took it apart was not 5/8"! It may have been worn down, because I know I could find a ball that big on the shop floor.

Not that it makes a big difference, but my model 1650 takes two flex disks (rag joints) in the rear coupling.

The ball helps center the driveshaft. A good hardware store should be able to get it. Oh, and how does the end of the driveshaft look? If the ball was worn, I bet the driveshaft is really worn.

There is no noticeable wear on the end of either shaft. It makes me wonder if the P/O had removed the ball at some point. Again, I'm not sure what was there, since I never found anything. I've got the ball on order from my local dealer.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
