Default Ross steering

I am working on rebuilding the steering on my 109. I upgraded the jam nuts to a thrust bearing and nylock nut and also replaced the plastic bushing in the top of the column with a shoulder bearing. The question I have is what kind of material is the D-shaped seal made of ? This steering box either did not have one or it has long since descentegrated(sp).

It is kind of a thin foam like substance. Not very hearty.

I am thinking of cutting one out of an old inner tube. Any reason it would not work?

You can get that part at the dealer still for a song and dance. I rebuilt the box in my 123.

I use that material that contractors use on houses between the concrete stem wall and the wood frame. It is the right thickness and seems to last a long time.

Cool Inner-tube?

The inner tube might not be the best material, because it has a tendency to "swell" when exposed to petrol-based products !?

OK I've been convinced that the inner tube is not the way to go. 72-149 thanks for the picture, that gives me a good idea of what their made of. The picture in the parts manual leaves a lot to be desired.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
