Default 1650 Won't Start

I have done some minor things to my 1650. When I got it. It started twice and then it would not start again. So I replaced the voltage regulator and did a once over of the connections. I now get a spark with the first crank but then It won't continue to spark. Does anyone have any ideas.

Thank you.

Sometimes a bad switch can cause that problem. Bad switch connections or internal switch problems can give many symptoms.

Test it by putting a voltmeter on the coil and see if you have voltage in the run postion, then turn to the start position and see if you still have voltage.

Another way would be to put a jumper from the battery to the coil and try and start it and see if you still have spark.

I have collected a bunch of bad switches through the years and when you check them out they can fail in many different ways.

Thank you for the advice. It was a bad coil. I now have a new problem. It won't start with the air cleaner on. But it will start just fine with it off. I have tried messing aroud with the air mixture on the carb but have not had any luck. any ideas.

The air filter was plugged up tight on my 1650 when I got it. The engine would run, but not good at all. Big difference when I changed it. Go ahead and install a new spark plug too. The spark plug will suffer when the air filter is dirty.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
