I like the smoothness of the 16 hp briggs but I feel they don't have the torque of the Kohlers. The Peerless transaxle is belt driven. You could swap a CI one it though and have a 582.

The 582 Special is an "economy" tractor. It was built a lot cheaper therefore being less durable than other cubs.

You could part it out, but someday, it might be something nice to see all together? Sure, it isn't a 782, or even a 682, but it is in one piece and in good shape, correct? It can still push a plow or mow, but not to the degree of another tractor. I'd vote for keep it as is for a keepsake.
I think of it as an old station wagon. They were once considered junk, but now, they are something folks are restoring and hot rodding. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
