My front pto on my 129 is bad. I will be needing another one and I have a couple of leads to follow up on, but I was wondering if all of the front pto's are the same for a 12 hp Kohler for the '60's and early 70's era cub cadet garden tractors and what a fair price is for one that has not been re-built. I have seen some rebuild kits available for about $50-$60 and I wanted to do some checking first with others who might have been down this road before.
Thanks! Cub Cadet 123

This link shows the differences in the PTO's. With a 129 you should have a Type B or Type B with brake.
http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/showthread.php?t=9 I have seen used PTO's run around $25 to $60 and rebuilt for $125.

These are easy to rebuild, just follow the instructions in the service manual. Make sure you buy a new button as these aren't included in the disc and spring kits.
The most difficult part will be removing the pto! There are 3 holes, each with 2 set screws in them. Make sure you have a high quality allen wrench and don't use a ball end or you could strip these out! I soak mine with Kroil and make sure I get all the crud out so the allen wrench is as deep as possible. Be sure you remove both set screws and the pto should come off with a little persuasion. Use a little anti-seize when you put the set screws back in. I would recommend you replace the bearing while you have the pto off. It uses an offset grind on the external race with a locking collar and can be very difficult to remove without destroying it.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
