1650 not charging

I just bought this old girl and the owner said its charging but I can tell it aint. Just for the fact when you turn the lights on they are very very dim even when its running. He by passed the voltage regulator. I found the wires but is the one for the batter suppose to be hot at all time or only when its on? I need a little help with it. Its does have the 16hp kohler still

well i tried it and i cant get anything out of the stator...all i know is tht the guy i got it from had it rigged to charge and it didnt charge. the more u turn on the more it pulled down the battery...but i tried hooking it up like it shows on the diagrahm and it only makes the wires get hot.

It sounds like you will need a new stator and then to repair the wiring so that is it able to be connected correctly.

for the uneducated here...what exactly is a stator and why is it needed? Do they fail often? Is there a similar part on an auto engine? On a Kohler 3xx, where is it and how big a job is it to replace it?

I'm not being a smart-a**...I really want to know! When I read the OP, I would have suspected the VR but I really don't know anything about a stator. Is it possible that jumpering around a bad VR would kill a stator or will a bad stator kill a VR?

It is the "Charging Coil" used to recharge the battery.

YUP...it is called an alternator

On a Kohler 3xx, where is it and how big a job is it to replace it?

It is located under the Flywheel. Yes, it is a bit of a chore to get at it.

Is it possible that jumpering around a bad VR would kill a stator or will a bad stator kill a VR

NO...on the jumpering around the V/R (on the 1650). I suppose a bad stator could fry a V/R.
