A few weeks ago, I got a new to me 147. It runs fine, but the mower deck blades slow down if I mow too fast or with the deck in it's lowered position. The deck belt seems tight, but that is hard to quantify. How do I determine if the problem is one of the belts, or the pto clutch slipping? What else could it be?
I'm mowing at full throttle, but I must mow quite slowly to do a good job. I can see the uncovered pulley on the right side of the deck slow down if I give it too much long grass or forward speed. Thanks Jason |

if the motor doesnt bog down when cutting the tall grass it sounds as if you have PTO slippage issue one way to tell is to try to turn it by hand with it engaged and the motor off if it turns at all I would say its rebuild/replace time for the clutch

If the belt is/was slipping, you'd be able to smell it. Not so with the PTO clutch.

No odor.
With the engine off and the pto engaged, what should I turn by hand? The blades or the pto itself? How hard of a job is it to rebuild the pto clutch? I just read the service manual, doesn't look too hard. Where do I get new parts? Thanks |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
