k161 rebuild

Let me start by saying I have never rebuilt an engine, this is something I would normally pay someone to do. However, I am going to try to rebuild this engine, it is something I always wanted to know how to do. It is a k161 out of the 1966 71 that I am taking down. I have provided a link to some pictures that I took of what came out of the engine. You tell me, is it worth saving? I thought if it is this bad I can’t mess it up. I plan on having it bored, what else would you do if you had it torn down this far. Thanks for any help.

You should be able to salvage the block. Your machinist will be the final answer on that. He may have to sleeve it. Won't know till he checks it out. The crank is another unknown till it gets miced in multiple places. Again, your machinest can tell you if it can be saved. The cam looks ok from the pics. You should be able to bring this engine back to life. Finish stripping it down and get the major pieces to a machine shop to check the specs and then you will know from there.

By the way, I found this inexpensive GM door spring tool works great for Kohler valve spring removal. Look for it at your local parts house.
