Hds 2155 sputter and stall

Hello. I have a hds 2155 what was sputtering when pot was engage. Then it continued after pto disengaged. I empty all thr gas and put new gas in. Same issue. Change fuel filter. Same issue. So then I took the carb off and cleaned it, which does require un hooking the choke wire. Put it back together and when choke is engaged about half way engine runs great. Close choke it starts to shut off. Any help or ideas would be much appreciated.

Thank you

If you have to close the choke partially to make the engine run "properly"
you have a lean condition, in other words you are not getting enough fuel to the engine.
That is usually plugged passages in the carb/main jet.
That said:
What is engaging a "pot"? do you mean a PTO?
Closing the choke means just that, the butterfly shuts off the flow of air causing more fuel to be pulled from the carb bowl enriching the mixture.
It is normal for an engine to sputter, blow black smoke and run bad when the choke is fully "closed" and some will stop ruining completely.

In order for us to help you, we need proper terms so we are all on the same
page so to speak. :bigthink:

Most likely you need to re-clean the carburetor, somewhere in one of the many tinny-weeny passages is some dirt or corrosion blocking the way.

You're likely getting enough fuel through to run the unit but as soon as you put a load on it fuel delivery can't keep up.
