Home built 3’ x 5’ trailer

While I had some time off around Christmas I decided to fabricate a trailer for my garden tractors to haul fire wood and other stuff in. I decided on a 3’ by 5’ size because it was small enough to fit on the trails in the woods but still plenty big to keep the tractor loaded down heavy.

I made the frame out of mostly 3/4” schedule 40 pipe. The axle is a piece of 3.5” angle iron with two 1” diameter steel rods welded on for the wheels. I made 4 on 4” wheel hubs to mount 18” golf cart tires and wheels on. This gives it better floatation on the mud. Plus the 1” axle can handle the weight better than the usual 3/4” on most garden carts. I also kept the axle pretty far back so I would have a lot of tongue weight for added traction. I’m not worried about hurting the axles on my cubs like I would be on a new lawn tractor. I also made a truss for the tongue to handle the stress.

The deck is just pressure treated deck boards held down under ange iron and self drilling screws. The sides are also 3/4” pipe with a single row of deck boards to keep small stuff from sliding out. The rear pipe is removable with two pins. Also, the bottom rear boards slides up and out too for easy loading.

I primed and painted it with my spray gun after hauling a few loads too make sure everything worked as I wanted. Overall, I am very pleased with it. It is plenty big enough that when fully loaded my 147 definitely knows its got a load on it pulling the steep hills on our property.

Oh, and please forgive me if I offend anyone with the red and silver tractor in the one picture. I must admit I like all brands of garden tractors.

Nice work on the trailer, and I hope I don't get banned for saying this, but I like your "red" tractor too.

Already used the 108 to pull it and it does a great job. Previous owner of that 108 must have taken good care of it. ;)

Thanks for all the compliments on the trailer. I am very happy with the results and use it all the time for work around the property.
