1782 starter problem
Has anyone else on here done the starter upgrade on a diesel and then the starter wouldn't engage the ring gear? The starter gear moves out just fine, but most times it won't engage the ring gear and it doesn't start turning until the drive is fully extended. If I turn the gear just a little by hand it will start. I admit that I bought a chinese starter instead of a Nippondenso.
What is everyone else's experience with the starter upgrade? |
I have the $80 el cheapo on my 882 and it works great. How old is yours?

Check the clearance of the teeth between the starter and the ring gear. You may have it just a bit too close to the ring gear. I had to fiddle with the starter on a 2182 Kubota WG600.

If memory serves and that's a big if, I think I used a pry bar to hold the starter as far away from the engine as possible and tightened the bolts. :bigthink:

Where did you buy your starter?

I can't move it enough to do any good, because of the alignment flange that goes into the hole in the mounting plate. I've got the mount off of the starter and I'm going to try turning some off just that side. If that doesn't do the trick, although not my first choice, I guess I'll just face it off flat. If I knew a Nippondenso would be any better I would just get one of them. I went cheap when I did it, because I didn't know for sure it would work that well. |
