149 mower deck question
1 Attachment(s)
Recently purchased 149 with mower deck (serial num. of deck in pic). My question is...can the spindles for 50" deck be pulled completely apart and cleaned? Also, can the grease fitting be removed? I see no spot for a wrench on it..
Also..lol...Is there a good sevice manual out there for the 149?..OK, that's it for now |
Here is the manual for your tractor

I have rebuilt spindles on a 50" deck. Two tapered roller bearings, two outer races, and two seals should do the trick. It's not too bad of a job - good luck!

Just my 2 cents but if you have the re-buildable type, I'd take them apart, clean out the old grease, clean the parts, inspect the bearings, replace any bad parts and re-assemble. Think a lot of us have tried the "I'll pump a bunch of new grease into them and hope it works". I've always ended up taking them apart after that and just had more of a mess to clean up. :beerchug:

My problem is, I'm not sure if they're rebuildable. I'm very unfamiliar with decks. I'll have some free time this weekend to get tractor put together (basket case) and then I'll try to work on spindles. Maybe they are just rusted to cap and appear to be non-buildable type I guess. I'll give it a shot this weekend.. thx folks.

OK... I was curious after ya'lls posts, so I took apart what i could on spindle. I was able to remove spindle housing cap. I'm now stuck with trying to see how the bearing is removed from the shaft. there appears to be a locking collar holding bearing on? How is this removed so I can access bearing and check spindle for any damage as well as bearing?

Post a pic of your spindles. If this is what you have then no the spindles are not rebuildable.

Sorry it took so long. I've been working to put Cub back together. Here's a pick of the spindles I have. They appear to be what you've posted...Is there a not break the bank alternative out there?

If it was me I'd look for a later deck with spindles like in the 1st pic. The second pic is a 44" GT deck I rebuilt with this style spindle. Look on C-List, Flea bay or call the sponsors. You can probably find a decent used deck for less than your style spindles will cost you. Also the later spindles will bolt onto your shell if you want to go that way. |
