New 86, good news, bad news......
Well, got some good news, and some bad news, there was an old 86 for sale at a small engine shop locally, engine has no compression. Went to ebay for a few weeks with no bids. Anyway I contacted the seller and took a look at it on Tuesday after work. Seemed real clean and everything there, including a 38" deck, and some wheel weights that I don't recognize. Made an offer I thought was fair and he accepted. Dad & I ran to town this morning and picked it up. I was pretty excited as it seemed to be real nice, especially for near 40 years old.
Dropped it off and started working on it about 10:30. Pulled the deck & mule drive off. Pulled the spark plug.....piston isn't moving. Drained the engine oil.....not much there. Ended up pulling the engine & set it down on my workbench......pulled the pan & cracked it open. Pulled out bits of connecting rod, which I expected......but the crank is scuffed up pretty good. That's depressing. I was kind of hoping I could get it together relatively cheap........ Anyway, what kind of options am I looking at? Do I need to hunt down a crank or can this be machined (are rods available for a machined k181 crank?) I'd like to fix this thing and run it, seems to be a neat old little tractor. PS As murphys law would have it, another 86 showed up on craigslist a couple hours away, although he wants a bit more than I gave for mine. But his is a runner.....(I know he listed it at $600 originally......dropped it to near a 1/3 of that now). Says he'll scrap it. I'm surprised its still there but mine is cleaner than his is in the picture. Trying to get pics resized, computer is not cooperating! |
Glad you got it picked up!
Don't worry too much yet. Get the crank out and have it checked. Parts are still available for that engine. I know a guy who may have a crank..... Now, about those pics.... :WWP::WWP::popcorn: |

Ok, think I've got them now
Attachment 55721 Attachment 55722 Attachment 55723 Attachment 55724 Anybody recognize those wheel weights? They seem to have an orange/red paint underneath the white. I don't see any markings on them. I had to pull the goofy lights off the front, unfortunately he drilled through the front header. I'll have to see if I can scratch up a clean header panel for it. |
Looks good. Those wheel weights look like Case weights. If you decide you don't want them let me know I have a few Case machines.

Looks good too bad about the motor,
I like the bullet holes on the hood. it has the hard to find muffler. Keep us posted on your progress. |
Looks great, all there and 38 inch deck, very nice 86.

Nice find on the 86. Looks to be complete and in nice shape. Good to see it has the original engine and muffler. Neither of the two 86's I used to own had that muffler. They are hard to find.
I'd have the crank checked out as well to see if it's saveable. FYI, you'll need to find a crank out of another 86. The crankshaft was longer on the PTO end to align the PTO with the mule drive. The starter/generator bracket is different too to move the S/G forward a tad. This was an 86 only thing. Other K181 cranks would work if you're not planning on using the PTO and mule drive. |
Nice find. Good to see yet another 86 owner! Mine's in not at good shape as yours, lots of surface rust on mine. My K181 needs an exhaust valve but no time to work on it. :biggrin2:

Thanks for all the comments. I didn't really need it but it just looked like it'd be a neat project and a nice tractor once I got it back together. Trying to find a small engine machine shop around here that could look at the crank. Seems to be a lost art nowdays. I had a Chevy small block machined at a shop nearby about 5-6 yrs ago, I may call them and see if they could do it.
P.S. Quick edit here I see the other 86 that was on C-list has been deleted, hopefully it found a good home |
