Well, got some good news, and some bad news, there was an old 86 for sale at a small engine shop locally, engine has no compression. Went to ebay for a few weeks with no bids. Anyway I contacted the seller and took a look at it on Tuesday after work. Seemed real clean and everything there, including a 38" deck, and some wheel weights that I don't recognize. Made an offer I thought was fair and he accepted. Dad & I ran to town this morning and picked it up. I was pretty excited as it seemed to be real nice, especially for near 40 years old.
Dropped it off and started working on it about 10:30. Pulled the deck & mule drive off. Pulled the spark plug.....piston isn't moving. Drained the engine oil.....not much there. Ended up pulling the engine & set it down on my workbench......pulled the pan & cracked it open. Pulled out bits of connecting rod, which I expected......but the crank is scuffed up pretty good. That's depressing. I was kind of hoping I could get it together relatively cheap........ Anyway, what kind of options am I looking at? Do I need to hunt down a crank or can this be machined (are rods available for a machined k181 crank?) I'd like to fix this thing and run it, seems to be a neat old little tractor. PS As murphys law would have it, another 86 showed up on craigslist a couple hours away, although he wants a bit more than I gave for mine. But his is a runner.....(I know he listed it at $600 originally......dropped it to near a 1/3 of that now). Says he'll scrap it. I'm surprised its still there but mine is cleaner than his is in the picture. Trying to get pics resized, computer is not cooperating!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
