782 Blowing fuses (regulator)

I have a 782 (later over 720,000 model) that is blowing fuses unless I disconnect the wiring harness at the voltage regulator.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

What should I check 1st?

If I disconnect the harness at the regulator it runs fine, except for not charging the battery. If I plug in the regulator only runs a few seconds and blows the fuse. The blown fuse is then too hot to handle!!!

Thanks,

Daryl

I had the exact same problem and it was a bad Stator. It could also be your voltage regulator.

Here is the thread from last year:

alot of good info.

goodluck.

Sounds like it over charging, i would do the necessary tests to check the stator output and if all is well its probably a regulator.

How do I check the stator output & voltage regulator. When I plug them in it dies within seconds.

Welcome to OCC!

Go to our tech section and download the service manual. While your in the tech section, study the section on solid state charging systems. It also tells you how to test.

uplug the 3 wire harness and get it running. trace the middle connection of the Voltage regulator, that will test the B+ DC voltage.

The 2 wires from the stator connect to the 2 outer connections on the voltage regulator.

See this from the tech library:

you need to keep your battery charged since it's not getting charged while running til you fix this.

Thanks for the replies, that was a lot of useful information.

I tried to do a search but didn't get the informative links & info that you guys shared.

Welcome to OCC! Good luck with your 782.

Thanks for the warm welcome.

I bought this mower with a multitude of problems.

1. Wrong ignition switch
2. wiring to regulator burned off at switch harness (probably caused by my current problem)
3. frozen rocker shaft (that was a BEAR to free up)
4. system not charging
5. seat switch bypassed
6. headlight housing broken
7. Loose spindles in outer 2 arbors of mower deck

maybe other problems but I can't remember.

I have everything fixed EXCEPT this pesky charging and blown fuse issue, but with the great pointers you've all given me, I think I'll get it figured out soon.

Thanks again

Also look for a short in the wiring harness.
