Cub Cadet 682 KT-17 which engine?

Hey guys, I have a 682 kt-17--of course, and have had it for years. How can I tell if it a series I or series II engine. I never could find the plate on the left side where it should be. Are there any other obvious characteristics that will tell me?

Thanks, I've been off the site for a couple years but now I want to fix it back up.

The series 2 has an oil filter, the series 1 does not.

Not true. I have a KT-17 Series II that has NO oil filter, right from the factory.

IF...everything is original, you can go by Chassis Serial Number of the tractor:

Series I #669971 to 726124
Series II #726125 & above

First off Welcome to OCC!
The series 1's did not have the block off plate on the block to hook up the oil lines. As Roland said the early series 2's did not have an oil filter but I thought still had the block off plate but don't remember for sure. I will have to look at some of mine to see.

On my Series II, there was no "block off" plate nor a provision for one.

I never have found a Kohler Reasoning to why some Series II had on oil filter and some did not. My "speculation" is, that is was buried into the "Specification" of the engine as to the buyer's requirements.

Yeah, I think you are right Roland. I have seen some series 2's with no block off plate provision.
Another thing to maybe look at is the oil fill. All the series 1's I have seen have had the square cap and all the series 2's I have seen have had the round filler cap. Not sure it's a proven fact but it is a usually a good place to look.

All the Series 1 i have seen had a pipe plug for the oil fill , and the Series 2 had a straight or angled pipe with a cap for the oil fill , if no one has changed it in it's life.

I have also seen them with/without the block-off plate.

Sorry to jump onto someone else's topic, but were any of the MTD built 6/782s series I's? Reason I ask is I found a white/yellow 782 close but I couldn't see a block off plate through the grill.

Just as was discussed above, some Series II had a block off plate, some didn't.

I was asking if series IIs started before MTD began production, (as in all MTD built units were built with series IIs) or at least that's what I meant. I was trying to figure out if it may have had an engine swap.
