Steering alignment on a 149

Is there anything special to be done here? Just eyeball it in?

I MIGHT get around to swapping my front axle out this weekend for one that will accept grease (long story and the replacement was free) and replace all my highly suspect rod ends.

the rod from the steering coloum to the left spindle should be 16 3/8 inch from the ends of the ball joints, from there just use a tape measure and measure the front and back of the tire and adjust the rod till you get the same measurement

make sure when your measuring the front and rear of the tire to have the tape measure the same height off the ground for both. since the tires tip out at the top it will throw off your measurement if you dont

Do you put a touch of toe on them for steering center or just leave it even front to back?

olds45512 05-23-2014 11:45 PM

i leave it even but a little toe in wont hurt

I believe the toe in should be 1/32 to 1/8 inch if I remember correctly from the service manual.
Not much, but some:bigthink:

Hummm.. I'll tinker with it within that range then. Right now the front wheels come back to center REALLY fast.. It may have too much in it already. I'll take a baseline and see where it stands out of curiosity.

:Morning: On my CC149. I used. steel ball joint rod ends, with a self lubricating insert, on the steering arm and the drag link. They are also available with a grease zerk. I also intalled a super steer kit and with tri-ribs on the front it is like I have power steering. I bought the rod ends from McMaster-Carr. As for the tow, I use 1/8". :American Flag 1:

An easy way to get a good measurement is to bungee a 2x4 to the front tires and measure across that. That's how I set up my race car back in the day. Probably not as critical on a 9 mph tractor though.
