Vertical to horizontal conversion??
 

Has anyone ever done or can it be done converting a vertical crank engine to a horizontal? The engine in question is a 14.5 hp kohler command. I remember old briggs engines it could be done,never have heard about doing it to a kohler.:bigthink:

Not that I am aware of. It's been asked before, I looked into it and the answer was no. Besides, for the time involved, why would you. Honestly, I've never even seen an old Briggs that you could convert.

It can be done, don't think it's worth the trouble. Not sure about the engine you are talking about.

I remember in small engine class in high school you could take a briggs change the the oil dipper and the back plate then it could go from a horizontal to vertical. Haven't ever done one myself.

there was a site on the internet, kinda like brian millers, where theres a section talking about doing exactly this...if i remember where i will surely let you know...i remember it sounding not too bad actually either..holes being drilled for oil passage and of course flipping and moving some things...

I have been looking throught the web and have not found any videos on how to convert a Kohler Magnum 20 or one like it from Vertical shaft to horizontal. I see a few clues and some details but not enough that i feel sure i can do
This. Also i was wondering how people who have done the conversion add mounting brackets to secure the motor to frame.

My curcumstances are this- i have a kohler magnum 20hp horizontal that has a broken connecting rod. So i disassembled it and the crank doesnt look to bad after placing the crank journal in muratic acid. The acid ate the aluminum right off and cleaned it up pretty nice. After using a micrometer both journals come out to be about 1.5005-1.5085. I will double check the measurements with plastigage tomorrow.

Now-I am able to pick up a good running vertical shaft 20hp Magnum. Not sure if i would be better off using this motor and modifying it to be a horizontal motor. So, if i go this route i would like to see a video or pics that better describe the step by step process. Let me know if anyone can add links amd addition information.

Check those specs you posted again, that's an .008" difference--way too much. Also would have thought it would have been closer to nominal or under--just thinking out loud, don't have a service manual in front of me.
As to your conversion question, I'm pretty sure Ol Geroge has done one, PM him for details. Even if he hasn't, he knows a LOT about Magnums and KT's.

I have heard of people doing this, never done one myself. Would be nice as it seems that I can pick up vertical Magnum twins all over the place, horizontal ones are almost nonexistent.
