Newbie with 124 questions

I picked up a 124 last winter. I finally got time to work on it. I plan on restoring it 100%. I have the 12hp stripped to the block and everything blasted and painted.

Question 1... When I took the clutch off, 3 small clips came off. I don't know how they go back in.

Question 2... I'm wanting to add a 3 point hitch. I see there are several different styles on ebay. I'm thinking the pivoting piece on the center fits between the frame rails where the factory holes are drilled. I see hitches for the narrow frames with a bracket that it pivots on, is that for other models besides the 124?

Question 3... I would like to also add a creeper in the future. Are they all universal? If not, which do I need?

Thanks in advance for any help. I'm really getting into these old Cubs. They were built like tanks.

First of all, welcome to OCC Arrowhead.

1. I assume you're referring to the anti-rattle springs on the PTO clutch. A lot of guys leave them out. If you put them back in, the springs go between the friction disc and the basket. It's hard to decribe how they go without a picture. Maybe someone else has a pic showing their placement.

2. You need a narrow frame 3-point setup. The ones with the extra bracket are for the 106-147 series of Cubs. Those would work but you wouldn't need the extra bracket.

3. I believe all of the creeper units are the same although the one for an Original Cub may be different.

:Welcome2:

Here's a link to a thread that has a lot of info and pictures of the PTO, from when another member rebuilt theirs......

Hope this helps. :beerchug:

The Original's creeper is totally different, and the handle is different between the NF and WF versions. Otherwise they are the same.

Thanks for the help guys!!

Matt G, excuse my lack of Cub knowledge, but what is NF and WF ? What should I look for when buying a creeper for the 124?

Narrow Frame and Wide Frame - it denotes generations of IH Cubs.

The Wiki is a decent overview of the IH cubs.

:bash2: I'm not good with the abbreviations yet. Thanks.

Is the clutch different with a creeper, or just a shorter drive shaft?

ACecil 08-24-2011 11:39 AM

The drive shaft is shorter, with a creeper. :beerchug:
