new 100

i just bought a 100 and i will try to get pics later but it supposedly has a new rebuilt s/g on it and it has the terminals for a car battery so i put a old car battery and the only thing i saw was sparks and the nasty burnt smell this thing is supposedly has been setting for a very long time so my question is what is the biggest battery a starter generator handle and can you get a rebuild kit for the starter
o and ps are these things supposed to be really easy to turn over it doesnt seem anything like my 1650

First thing to do would be to check over ALL of the wires on the 100. Seems you have yourself a short someplace, because just by hooking up a bigger battery isn't going to make sparks fly as long as it's 12 volt.
And your second question about starting slow, all of mine do compared to the newer model tractors.

well i never got to hear it crank and the sparks came from the inside of the starter generator

So you just hooked up the battery and the sparks came out of the S.G. ?

Did it try to start the engine? Are the insulators on the s/g post cracked? You can get repair parts for them.

I think you need to check all your wires. Find a wire diagram and go through everything. Only thing I can figure is something is connected wrong. Hopefully one of the others with way more smarts than me will chime in.

found the problem the sparks were coming from a brush wire touching the housing because the brush was i sideways
