leaky carb
 

My 108 carb has been leaking slightly for a while, just a steady occasional drip, enough that it smells...seems like its coming from around the bowl, but its kinda hard to pinpoint the source precisely. Someone said I need to rebuild, which I really dont want to do until spring-it runs fine, I just dont like the garage stinking like gasoline. Any suggestions for holding me over till the snow melts?

your 108 should have a fuel shutoff valve under the tank. if it doesn't, then purchase you a shutoff at your local lawnmower repair shop. a carb rebuild is very quick and easy to do, if you follow the manual, it should just as good or better than before and with no gas leaks. hope this helps. jeff

A carb rebuild is very quick and easy...no need to save it until spring.

I can screw up anything, and with snow to plow almost every day I can't take a chance...I'll use the shutoff (my gawd, how dumb can I be? Please dont answer...) until I feel confident I can do the rebuild right...

Wayne if you follow Matt's guide during the rebuild you'll be fine. Do a read thru and if you don't feel like you can do it take it in and have it done. It's a fire hazzard is it is now so please don't take that risk.

there were two things that i never understood, first was carbs and the second was women. i finally rebuilt a #26 with the instructions you can find on this site (of course, matts' instructions are very correct and easy to follow) and now i can do them without the instructions. i do tend to forget how to set the high idle and so forth, so i have to resort back to the manual for that. and being on my second marriage, i am REAL close to figuring out women!!!! LOL !!!!!! seriously though, with matts' "how to" guide, you can do it!!! have faith my brother cuber!!!! jeff

The guys that build carbs also make manuals for them. EASY!!!

Why don't my fuel shut off work?
Even when I remember to shut the fuel off, the tank is empty next time I try to start them and I can see where fuel leaked down the side of the engine.

If it's leaking gas everywhere, you have problems other than the shutoff valve. If the shutoff is left on, fuel should not be leaking out of the carb. Have you rebuilt your carb and adjusted the float properly?

No I have not rebuilt this carb.
But the question is... How do I fix the shutoff?
Or do I just need to replace the sediment bowl assy.?

Is the shutoff leaking externally, or all of the gas coming out of the carb somewhere? If it's coming out of the carb with the shutoff off, then I'd say the needle in the shutoff is worn out and you just have to replace the whole thing. Keep the old one for spare parts, and if you get an aftermarket one, buy a Kohler gasket for the bowl, as the gasket that comes with the aftermarket ones is crap.

Is the fuel tank leaking around the area where the shut off valve is located?

So you think the needle has a groove and wont shut off?
Or the seat is worn out? Or both?

It's hard to say. The seat is machined into the body of the sediment bowl, so there's no replaceable seat, and the needle is brass. They're probably both galled up. If you take it apart you will probably see a bunch of scoring on the needle tip. The problem with having a shutoff before the fuel filter is that all the junk in the gas goes through the shutoff valve before getting filtered, and gets ground into the shutoff needle every time you turn off the gas.
