1572 starter issues

I'm wondering if i could get advise from the "wise ones" hereon about a starter replacement for my 1572.

Should i spend $300-$400 to get an OEM replacement or go with a $150.00 jungle store version...?:bigthink:

I went with the OEM starter. I found a NOS for under 100.00 a few years ago. What is wrong with yours? They can be rebuilt.

I have a gear reduction on a 1772 and it lasted about a year.

I did have the glow plug upgrade done and a very good ground. The glow plug upgrade helps too.

This is my 1572 when it was restored. Good reading.

The problem started with intermittent failure to engage; just click or start to engage then spin... Progressed to nothing with the key and just spinning when jumped across the solenoid posts... I figure the solenoid is bad but they cost more individually than do the whole starter assembly...

Where are you looking for the solenoid? They should not be that expensive.

Enjoyed the pics of your b1572 from when Diesel Doc refreshed it... I bought mine at an estate auction in PA; it had 40 something hours on it; 42 if memory serves... It is still less than 50 hours. The old feller who owned it had a snowblower mounted on the front and only used it when there was a snow worthy of blowing so mostly it sat in his garage... That's just taking up space in the shed now; don't need a snowblower in Eastern NC...:) I'm surprised at the starter issue though, due to low hours...

I'm using my rudimentary online skills to search for solenoids but mostly word of mouth from suppliers i've contacted about OEM replacements...

Do you have a local shop that rebuilds starters and alternators? We still have one but they are getting like radiator repair shops.

dcbig 04-15-2026 02:35 PM

I've never had occasion to look for a shop like that but i will ask around. Thanks.

I don't know what your solenoid looks like, but some solenoids can be opened very easily and be rebuilt. I've done this on car starters dating back to the 60's.

I replaced a supposedly bad solenoid one time on a Kohler command, turns out it was not bad. I did not have a full 12 volts when the engine was cranking so the solenoid would not engage.

Make sure your brakes are locked and pto is off.

To test the solenoid run a wire directly from the solenoid and touch the other end to the + on your (known good) battery. If it doesn't spin over then it's most likely the starter.

Make sure you have a good ground. I would remove it and clean it. A lot of my diesels have 2 ground wires, one to the frame and one to the engine.

If it does spin over, you may need to add the starter relay like our member makes on here.

I've had a China starter last 10+ years on my 882 and just replaced it with a $102 one from Scamazon. We shall see how long this one lasts.

Lots of replacement ones out there. Just do a Google search on 37560-63011.

Here is a good read if you haven't already seen this.

Good luck and keep us posted how you make out.

Well, i got distracted by another project and just revisited this site. I appreciate the comments and they've been insightful... I was sitting by the 1572 feeling bad about having to remove motor mount bolts and jack the engine up to remove the starter (I am the reluctant mechanic) and i decided to tap on the starter with a small hammer... Lo and behold, it fired right up and ran beautifully... Now i wonder if simple inactivity just had the starter stuck...?

Check Ground

I will echo Oaks comments on check your ground. I "went through" about 4 amazon gear reduction starters on my 782D before I realized insufficient ground was a contributing factor. I ended up adding a second ground from the battery to the top of the engine and it cured all of my issues.

The nice thing about the gear reduction starters is they are so much easer to change vs. the OEM without the nose casting, however its hard to beat a good OEM. Your choice really on which one to use, I have used both and have been successful.
