149 Vs. 169
I have an opportunity to buy a 169... But have a couple questions:
1) I already own a 149, will the rear rototiller from the 149 fit the 169? 2) How hard is it to find parts for the 169? The 169 already has a bucket loader. I was going to build one for my 149. So, my plan is to fix up the 169 and keep the rototiller from the 149 if it fits the 169... Then sell the 149. Thanks for your help in advance... Steve |

Another thought... The 149 I have is in better shape than the 169 that I am about to purchase.... How hard would it be to take the loader off the 169 and move it to the 149?

Are the 149 and the 169 the same size physically? Seemed like the 169 was a little bigger, but since I didn't have them side by side I couldn't tell for sure?

149 and 169 are the same series tractor. The big difference is 149 came with 14HP K321 Kohler motor and the 169 came with 16HP K341 Kohler motor. The 149 was produced from 1971 to 1974 and the 169 was produced only in 1974.

Please show pictures of each.....I am new here , but I have a 129 with a loader...it is my first Cub and I can't believe how well they are made...do you know what diameter the front wheel spindles are on yout 149 and 169 tractors?...I am looking to change out the axle on mine and go with larger spindles to handle the weight from the loader.....thank you......Mark

129, 149, 169 all had 3/4 inch front wheel spindles. Parts are largely interchangeable. IH went to 1 inch spindles part way through the Quiet Line series production. (800, 1000, 1200, 1250, 1450, 1650). I'm pretty sure 1 inch spindles from the QL can be put on the earlier WF (129, 149, 169) tractors' axles.
As for pictures, the 129, 149 and 169 look identical except the 169 has a larger air filter housing. The hood decals have different color stripes. Here's a 149. |
Not knowing or seeing any condition of the models being mentioned, one can only throw out their opinion of the situation as presented, so here is mine....
To own a 149 simultaneously with a 169 is almost dreamland for most people on this forum. That being said, a person with a tiller on his 149, and then a loader on a potential 169 purchase makes the question even more insane. With work and effort, you could have a combo of two of the most desirable garden tractors IH ever made, combinded with the two most desirable attachments ever made. I guess I'm sayin', "if you ain't buyin', stand back and get the hell out of the way". |

I couldn’t agree more with ironman! As I’m reading this post, scrolling down thinking......you’ve got to keep both.... the whole post is a trick question.
As for the axle swap, I did it on my 125. Before |

After.
I’m not sure about the spindles being interchangeable, but I wouldn’t think it was any easier than swapping the whole axle. |
Thanks for all the insight... I might keep both but Im almost out of room... Its not a trick question...LOL

Nato, could you post information on your axle swap? That is part of my "To Do" wish list for my 126. Thanks! Dave

Wide frame wheel spindles (knuckle assembly) are not interchangeable with Narrow frame front axle spindles. They are between the Quiet Line and Wide Frames and among the Narrow Frames. To get 1" spindles on a NF, you'd have to swap the entire axle assembly from a QL.

The Quiet Line 1” spindles are a direct swap onto a 149/169 front axle. I did the swap on mine. You’ll also need the wheels that fit the larger bearings.

Thanks for the responses IHinIN and sawdustdad. I don't want to hijack this thread, so I'll start a new one. Thanks again!
