Brain Storming Oil Cooler

I am not an engineer or expert. I was brainstorming on putting an oil cooler on a k-series Kohler.
Looking for pros and cons...
Could I use a mechanical fuel pump to pump oil through an oil cooler?
Perhaps by placing an NPT fitting in the sump of an oil pan, route it to the "fuel" pump, then back out to an oil cooler, then from the oil cooler to an NPT fitting on the block?
One major question...is the pump strong enough for oil?

Again, just brain storming......:bigthink:

Unnecessary.
Not likely the fuel pump will pump oil anyway.
Nothing to gain.
Too much involved for no gain.

Is your K series running hot??

Merk 09-10-2018 02:55 PM

Why would you want to do this?

Run an 30 weight dino oil in it and it shouldn't have any problems. I use Kohler oil in all my K-series engines.

There is something wrong-not set right if the engine is running hot.

Thanks for the replies

I appreciate the feedback guys. No...engine running well. was just brainstorming. I think the best response was a lot of work with no gain.
Thanks again.

If you're gonna go through all that trouble you better add a filter.

A fuel pump wouldn't make enough pressure to push oil through a filter. I really don't think a fuel pump would pump 30wt oil at all..... but I never tried it. Even if it did, it's only a few cc's per stroke. 2, maybe 3 at most. It would pump so slow, you wouldn't need a cooler. It would cool just going through a steel tube 12"-18" long.

Big waste of time anyway.

It won't.. We tried using a electric fuel 12 psi pump with 5/16 inlet and outlet to transfer some oil. It started to pull it but as soon as it hit the pump it stopped.

The OP is talking about a diaphragm cam driven pump, not an electric one.

I would say that might even be tougher to pass oil through... With an electric pump once the oil is hot you might have a chance. I tried it with cold oil..

Ozcub 09-12-2018 07:56 PM

Put a styrofoam box around the sump with ice in it that will cool the oil , you can use the same method to cool beer

While you are at it.... Make sure you wrap the exhaust with thermal heat cloth and coil the fuel line in a can with ice..... Need all the HP you can get out of the K series to mow....

Don't forget to port and polish the valve train.... Lighten the piston skirt, mill the head... shave the flywheel,

Really....?

ol'George 09-13-2018 08:20 AM

Add turboo incapuslaters to the valve rotors, transgender spark plugs,
and silly cone karbon wires.
Only run 5 balls in the bearings instead of seven and make sure they are lubed with castro light weight earl.
Oh and don fergit marvelous misterious oil additive in the muffler.:beerchug:

This will surely keep the muffler bearing from wearing prematurely !

Some of you guys remind me of my kid. I make a little joke and then he takes it way to far and then Daddy has to yell.
