How do you dispose of used Hy-Tran?

Hi all,

I was changing the Hy-tran fluid today in my 682, and as I was pouring the used fluid from the pan to a 5 gallon jug, I thought to myself "how am I gonna get rid of this stuff". I don't know why it never crossed my mind over the years with all the Hy-Tran changes I have done. I have close to 15 gallons of it now.

I have a neighbor up the road who burns my used motor oil in his shop furnace, but he told me he will only burn motor oil...no hydraulic fluid. I called a couple of auto parts stores locally that accept used motor oil, and they both said they don't accept hydraulic fluid.

Any ideas of what type of place to pursue next. I have a reputable JD dealer less than a 1/4 mile from my house, and they said they only dispose of fluid that they change in there shop..no drop offs. I would hate to have to pay to dispose of this stuff, as it already cost a fortune when its new..ugh

Thanks,

Jeff (teet)

Really? It's less than 40 bucks for 2.5 gallons around here.

But I too have the same issue, haven't found a place to take the used stuff.

Its $8 a quart at my Cub dealer...He doesn't sell it in bulk unfortunately.

Guess i'm lucky to have a Case dealer 2 miles from my house :biggrin2.gif:

EDIT: Jeff, I went to the Case dealer locator and you have two within 10-15 miles of you. You might want to give them a call.

Thanks Shawn,

I picked up 5 gallons a couple years ago from a Case dealer not too far away, but they recently went out of business. I'll definitely check around again, thanks for the heads up!:biggrin2.gif:

I don't have any idea why someone who burns waste oil wouldn't want hydraulic fluid......It is pretty close to automatic transmission fluid...Might want to try asking the local tranny rebuilder where they get rid of their fluid.

I take all my used oil (engine oil, trans fluid or hydraulic) to advance auto parts. You dump it in the tank yourself.

I have worked in shops where we burned used oil. Every type of oil burns differently. When you change from engine oil to trans oil you have to readjust the stove. I have NEVER been impressed with any used oil stove.

I plan to add mine to my roundup sprayer and use it on weeds. Also some truck lines have a filter system where the oil is filtered and added back to the fuel and is burned with the Diesel fuel.

Amigatec 06-16-2010 07:11 PM

I know but it kills the weeds.

I am fortunate. My local county Recycling Center takes any oil for FREE.

Diz Jr. 06-16-2010 11:24 PM

Wish you were closer. I would take it off your hands. I don't understand why those places won't burn it in their waste oil heaters. We burn it in ours at work when ever we can find it.

TEET 06-16-2010 11:30 PM

Problem solved.....I put an ad on Craigslist tonight advertising used hydraulic fluid, and I received several responses from guys that wanted to burn it in their shops. Guess I should have thought of that sooner...the guy that came out tonight to get it told me to let him know any time I have more, and he'll stop over and pick it up. Cant beat that...I don't even have to take it anywhere.

Thanks for all the ideas fellas!

I also find it kind of odd... I have a waste oil furnace and I burn most anything.

So would a nuclear warhead. Just because it works doesn't mean it's a good idea...

Around here the county and townships use it to put on dirt roads to keep the dust down. They use a mixture of donated oils.

Check with your local landfill. Many landfills now have oil and other hazardous goods disposal sites, to keep people from dumping them in the landfill. I know ours here takes old batteries, old appliances, oils, paints & thinners, pesticides, and just about any other hazardous waste you can think of. No charge at all, other than our county taxes.

bigdaddyjak 06-24-2010 05:41 PM

I wait until its dark and dump it on my neighbors tomato plants !! Well really my buddy takes it and burns it in his oil furnace to heat his shop !

ol'George 06-25-2010 08:18 AM

Just dump it in the Gulf of Mexico,
--nobody will notice .
Serious now, Tractor Supply around here takes it for free but limits the quantity to 5 gal. per visit.

1250cubcadet 06-25-2010 12:25 PM

Hy Tran

I just go to the dump in my town and I mix it in with motor oil.......they dont know the difference and its better than throwing it oitside in the woods like many people do. Good Luck:BlahBlah:

Roy Najecki 06-28-2010 12:04 AM

In Rhode Island anybody can take hazardous waste, like used anti-freeze, Hy-Tran, oil paint, pesticides, etc. to the state dump where they sort it all out and properly dispose of it at no charge. You might ask your towns public works guys who takes their used liquids.

Thanks for all the input guys. I did find a few places that take hydraulic/motor oil, as well as antifreeze. My local landfill (WM High Acres) is lass than a mile from my house, and run by Waste Management...they are very picky about bringing any type of used oil to there facility. My mother in law works there in the scale house. My county is lacking when it comes to hazardous waste recycling, but a neighboring county has provisions to accept most hazardous materials at various drop off locations. I tried to bring some old household chemicals to one once when we first moved into our house, and they demanded proof of residence from their county...ugh:bash2:

I found a custom "hot rod" shop a few miles away thats happy to burn it in their waste oil burner though, and he has a several hundred gallon tank outside his shop. He told me to stop by anytime and dump whatever I had in it.

In my search I also found a place that takes used tires free...they shred them up to make material for playgrounds and such.

Thanks all!!
