Has anyone ever drilled out the 5/16 hole on the left front spindle and left front steering arm to take up slop... i'm thinking I might drill it to 3/8 and install a Bolt to take up the play... any thoughts????

It's supposed to have a roll pin, all the bolt will do is egg shape the hole. I would drill the hole just big enough to make it round again and then buy a roll pin that fits tight.

There are taper pins that you can use also from Mc master Carr.They are solid.
I have never used one but it is better than a bolt.

That will work but needs to be drilled with a tapered drill and reamer to make it tight.

You could also drill it out to 3/8" and use a 3/8" spiral pin (much better than a bolt).

OR, you could drill it to a metric size just big enough to get rid of the slop and use a metric spiral pin.

thanks to all of you, this site is awesome. ill give it some thought, but the taper pin looks looks like the best bet. ill let you know how i make out......

Referencing the other site posted, here is some links to MSC you may find useful. Note that taper pins that are threaded are threaded on the big end for pulling the pin out of a blind hole. If you are going to secure it in place with a bolt, make sure you can drill and tap the pin first!

The more I think about this the more I need to go see how many we have that are loose, buggered, welded, have bolts, or are tied on with electric fence wire:bigeyes::biggrin2:

I drilled and tapped a hole to except a set screw just below the spiral pin. Tightened it up, and still snug with no slop.
Plus when you have them sunk, dab a little paint on top and no one will ever know.

I drilled mine out big enough to put a bronze bushing. When the bushing weàrs you just pop out the old one and install a new one.
I noticed that the spindle is some very hard steel. Unless I just happened to have a dull drill bit.
