Sand or soda

Morning all,

I'm down to roll pins holding the brake and deck lift levers so im hoping to be down to bare frame rear and front end parts on the 129. But I want to know what's recommended for old coating removal... sand or soda?

I know most of the cub is cast or formed steel... but i have some aluminum rims I need soda blasted and didn't know if it would be worth the extra expense and decon on the cub.

Thanks guys

Matt

I use fine silica sand for everything, it cuts fast and doesn't leave to rough of a texture.

Awesome Olds! Thanks... should any shop have fine silica sand? And will I have to sand before I prime?

I buy my sand at a local building supply business, around here it's $8.50 for a 100 lb bag . If your using a quality high build primer there no need to sand, if your going to use cheap stuff then you may want to go over it with 220 grit just to smooth it up a bit.

One thing I will tell you is that silica sand is known to cause cancer but so is all the paint your going to be using, wear a dust mask under your blast hood and you'll be fine.

Lol thank you Tim, im a plant/refinery inspector cancer is peobably inevitable for me. However i will take all the necessary precautions as I'm not volunteering for it. I'll have the blasting done at a shop as i dont have a compressor and my wife will atest that I don't do anything cheaply haha. I want to use a good self etching primer and IH paints.

Thanks Tim!

I've heard some bad stuff about using sand.

What is wrong with this stuff? I think I paid $7 a bag at Northern and it worked well. I always wear a respirator and blast outside because I don't have a cabinet yet. I lay down a large tarp and keep reusing it also.

That's because the internet is full of people with limited to no experience that like to spread old wives tales, I have hundreds of hours of blasting experience and I only use fine silica sand.

Can you reuse the sand Tim,I know the black beauty stuff can be reused many times.

I guess Tim but I'm not sure I would risk it. Of course the doc tells me not to drink so much beer but I like the taste.:beerchug::biggrin2:

Here's a little reading I found.

Yes but we don't, the chunks of paint that come off like to clog the tip when it's reused

you should put a sifter thingy on the bottom of the cabinet to catch the debris.

zippy1 10-06-2016 11:18 PM

I'm Mr. Small time compared to you experts, but I like the Black Diamond. I blast on the cement driveway, then sweep it up and screen it back into the blaster. Reuse it three times, then in becomes part of the gravel driveway.
To the OP. I would be causes blasting around the differential, stuff get's in everywhere, and hard to get it all back out. I do not blast anything that will have oil in it. Diff, or engine...:beerchug:

we use glass beads in the cabinet, the silica sand gets used for the big stiff. we have a 12x16 building we blast all the tractor parts in, the blaster holds 100lbs and is powered by two big screw compressors. we've tried sifting it but its so time consuming that its not economical.

Hey Zippy brought up a good point, how do you clean/strip the rearend and hydro housings? I was leary about having them blasted due to the openings and having the abrasive remianing inside.

I Use Black Diamond On Everything But The Rear axle. Use soda for that.
