129 moves sporadically

1 Attachment(s)
I bought this 129 and I am having problems with it moving forward and backwards. What it does is move sometimes and not others. To get it to move, I have to move the handle forward and back all the way and pretty quickly then it seems to go with good force. Tonight I popped off the tunnel cover and expected to see the linkage not moving or something, but it moves perfectly with no binding or anything. The handle moves with no real tension like my others. Don't think it is the 2 valves because it is both a forward and reverse problem.
I purchased it for the rear agg tires and expected to sell it. To my surprise the 12hp engine is perfect running with no smoke and the fender bodywork is real nice. Any suggestions??

Standard answer we give about 100 times a year: Did you change the fluid and filter on the rear? Or at least check it?? If you didn't, start with that.

I did check the fluid level and all good. Not sure how to check the filter unless I replace it. Also no leaks of any fluids!!

It will probably take more effort than this but (just because it's cheap and easy) if the relief valves are the manual style, try grabbing the little tits on each one with some pliers and see if you can pull them up, maybe twist them when pulling up.

If that doesn't do it, you're back to changing the oil and filter...

Just think, when you get this one working, you'll be looking for another pair of tires.

the trunion springs might have fallen out due to worn out parts, look back under the fenders and you'll be able to see it

I would change the fluid and filter before going any further.

Ditto. Filter probably weighing in at just over 5 lbs:biggrin2:

You aren't going to sell this 129 once you get it fixed, you realize that already.....don't you? I'm with the rest, I believe it is your filter but you may still want to spray those relief valves with some PB Blaster and as Mark pointed out, make sure they are fully actuating.

Great points to check. I have some generic IH fluid and a filter in my basement. But I hate to say that I have to sell it. There isn't enough room to keep them all as much as I want to!! would like to keep it together rather than sell it off piecemeal. Just hope to get enough back for it

Make sure you use a Cub, NAPA or WIX filter. We have recently seen guys that have used engine oil filters and they don't flow so the tractors a no go. NAPA # is 1410 and WIX is 51410, don't remember the Cub # off the top of my head.

Just wondering if you got it fixed and what the problem was, sure is a nice looking tractor for it's age.

Well Tuesday was Cub day. Was able to get my Moms yard done with the 1250 and then do some work on the 129. Pulled the tunnel cover and removed the hydro calves and all looked good. No sludge on them and the center pins are up. Next got the rear cover off and noticed all the sludge on the upper part of the case so I cleaned it then installed a new filter and rear gasket. She starts and moves on her own power!! You guys were right again!! Need to do a few minor housekeeping issues on her and get her ready to sell. She will be ready for another 30 years. Maybe someone here will want her!!
