109 owners??

Just curious what people think of them, pro and cons

Im to pick one up on sat that has the engine disassembled, the seller had intended to have it rebuilt but never did. I like the k241s and likely have any parts that might be needed. It looks reasonable and has a deck, no seat tho, but cheap. I buy/sell alot of GTs and wont know which way I'll go with it until I get it home and look it over, ideally it can be repaired, cleaned up and passed on to somebody else to use or fully restore.

When it comes to hydro tractors I don't really like anything smaller than a 12hp, as I understand it the hydro rear end is only about 80% efficient so a 10hp engine get cut down to 8hp. Plus I mow with a 48" deck and 10hp is borderline not enough power in my opinion.

You still get 10hp at the deck if you are sitting still right? So unless you mow everything up hill that loss wouldn't bother would it?
i don't know I mow with the 149 and a 38in deck so don't listen to me

42 inch deck maxes out a 10hp. 48 inch really needs a 12hp+, Unless, or course, you cut the grass daily...:biggrin2:

My 109 had a pretty tired 10 hp and a 42" deck on it when I got it, it did ok but I always it was a little under powered.

It now has a pretty fresh 10 hp and a 38" deck... I wouldn't have a problem with a 42" deck, but I would be concerned if I got behind and it was all I had to mow with.

Although, I also have a 105 with a 42" deck and it just kicks butt! So much so, that I let my Brother have it on permanent loan. AND THAT GUY can bend a crow bar in a sand pile!

Thx, how easily are the decks removed for cleaning and maintenance? I think the last CC deck I had to deal with was an early '90s 1862 so that wont compare. Some of these older GTs require a contortionist and two trained monkeys to get a deck off.
I have two Cub projects here already so I doubt this 109 will be here long, but I like to sell 'good' stuff so I'll refresh the 241 and clean up the tractor, new seat... and hopefully get it into the $500-$600 range for resale.

It takes me about 2 minutes to take my deck off and about 3 to put it back on.

I'm not as adept at R & R ing these decks as Tim is, but yeah, a couple minutes off and a few back on. The hardest part is probably sliding them out and then back under, only because they are so heavy.

I timed myself putting it in without the belt for the fun or it and to answer this and it took me 1 minute and 17 seconds on my 129 at a normal pace.

zippy1 05-29-2015 11:32 PM

Put it this way. I can get one off in under five minuets, and "about" ten minuets to get it back on. Wheel from side to side to get the back pins and holes lined up is what takes me so long.
I raise the tractor up with a ceiling hoist, roll the deck under, lower the tractor and hook it up.......
But, sometimes there a little stubborn.:biggrin2:

I dont mind the time so much but crawling around on the floor isnt getting any easier, and neither is getting back up.

I made three new aluminum ramps tonight for my GT Rescue trailer, I'll be testing them out when I go pick up this 109, all 1/8 alum scrap with 1/4 steel hangers to hook onto the trailer, might add some expanded alum grate to the tops but there wasnt enough in the scrap bin just yet. 5 hours, 240 rivets, $0.00.... a little overkill for GTs but I have a 154 Loboy and a Ford 2N also.

Wow lance great work. I like how you made the transition pieces on the opposite end too. Nice and light, excellent job

Thx, the ramps worked very well, and Im pretty happy with the 109 also, it is a basket case with a box of parts where the seat should be but the only engine damage is the piston, and the rest of the tractor is very good, tiller and deck both in working condition, good bodywork, good wiring, even the steering is decent... I dont have time for it right now but it is well worth fixing:)

Sweet looking ramps, and equally sweet looking 109:beerchug:

I have a couple projects on the go so I wont be starting another engine rebuild right away but it is a good candidate to work with, especially since a k241 can be built up to have more than 10hp. The PO said it was still running but got very noisey and started to smoke alot, he took the engine apart two years ago with intentions of rebuilding but never got around to it, he had it advertised for $250, I offered $120 a couple weeks ago and waited, I think I'll come out ahead in the end but it wont be fast cash.

The ramps worked very well, I wanted 3 of them for picking up 3 wheeled vehicles but even with a four wheeler the extra section is nice to avoid stepping in between them. There was no flex at all with the little 109 on them, could probably drive a truck over them.
